"I'm not sure I believe all of that," you reply, "but why are you telling me this now?"

"Well," [[Mr. Hilliard]] says, "though it's not always true, the changes usually happen shortly after puberty, so this school is when most of the changes occur.  It only happens to a small fraction of the student body, no more than ten percent of boys and much less than that of girls."

"So you're saying that I might run into some people changing gender because of this experimentation, is that it?" [[you|You]] say.

"Well, maybe, but more importantly, there is a tiny chance that you yourself will change gender," he replies.

"What!?  Now wait a minute.  I didn't sign up for any experiment!" 

"Oh, you don't sign up for it.  Everybody in Rosestead is a part of it.  Once you arrived here and drank our water, the Process already started and there's no way to stop it, I'm afraid," Mr. Hilliard said apologetically.  "But I assure you it's nothing to concern yourself about.  Remember that it only affects those who ought to be affected.  If you've never had any fantasies about being the opposite gender, you almost certainly have nothing to worry about."  Well, that's a relief.  You've certainly never had one of those.

"In fact, many, many more young boys end up with somewhat, ahem, enhanced masculinity as a result of the Process than end up changing into girls."

"Enhanced?"

"More sexual dimorphism.  You know, more musculature, larger phalluses, somewhat more aggression.  Wrestling is very popular here.  Similarly, some women become more feminine.  You will probably notice that Rosestead High probably has a higher ratio of sexually attractive females than is typical.  Also, the Process seems to enhance most people's libidos.  You will find that the entire community, including the school faculty, is aware and understanding of this.  Are you a virgin, Parker?"

You are astonished by the question, but your ingrained respect for authority forces you to answer him.  "Umm...no," you lie.

"Well, if you were, you probably wouldn't stay one for long.  I don't think Rosestead High has ever graduated a virgin."

You're not sure you understood everything that he said, but you get the gist.  That would explain Belinda's sexual aggression and Mrs. Anderson's tolerance of her husband's affairs.  No wonder Ethan likes the school so much - lots of sexy females who are more likely to put out.  If you're a teenage boy, what's not to like?

"Now that that's out of the way, let me introduce you to Coach Donovan and his wife.  They both have a free period right now."
